Masks and sanitisers provide excellent protection against viruses such as COVID-19. It is for this reason that they are used by healthcare professionals when performing medical procedures. A quality mask blocks airborne transmission between individuals by stopping the transit of pathogens (viruses or bacteria) which would otherwise shed respiratory aerosols or droplets into the nose or mouth.
An effective mask should always be impermeable to mist, and those which are N95 grade will completely block the inhalation of even smaller pathogens, with some models filtering them out. Aside from bacteria and viruses, surgical level masks are also designed to shield doctors and staff from swallowing or breathing bodily fluids. It must be emphasized that masks can vary significantly when it comes to their protection level.
The majority of masks are created using nonwoven fabric which results from melt blowing procedures. They were first introduced during the 1960s after which they phased out cloth face masks. Their fluent repellant side is worn outward while the absorbent side is turned inward. Masks designed for laboratory work are extremely high in quality and always come with a very tight seal.
Sanitiser, which is also known as disinfectant, is a chemical agent which is made to eradicate microorganisms which are present on surfaces which are inert. Disinfection won’t always destroy every microorganism, as some bacterial spores are resistant, so in surgical or laboratory settings sterilization is used instead, which totally destroys every pathogen. Sanitiser differs from antibiotics, which eradicate microorganisms inside the human body, or antiseptics, which eliminate microorganisms in living tissue.
The popularity of disinfectants has increased greatly since the emergence of the coronavirus. It operates by weakening the cellular microbial wall or disrupting their metabolism. A good disinfectant should also be considered a decontaminant, since it will greatly reduce the presence of pathogens on any surface it is applied to.
The masks and sanitisers sold at McDaid Pharmacy are surgical grade. They include products such as Apo IPA Alcohol Sanitiser Wipes, Crystal Clear Protective Face Shield, Hand Sanitiser, KN95 Face Masks and Antiseptic Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes. These products will prevent viruses or bacteria from entering the body and they can destroy any pathogens which are present on skin or within mucous membrane. One of the main benefits of using these products is that they can disinfect and clean simultaneously. Disinfectants will usually eradicate more germs in comparison to sanitisers.
