Suma is an herb often mistakenly referred to as Brazilian ginseng, but the two herbs are actually quite different. Suma is a vine found in the rainforests of the Amazon, mainly in South America but also in some parts of Central America, but it is only the root of the vine that is used for medicinal purposes.
Used by residents of the Amazon and South America as a traditional folk remedy for over three centuries, suma imparts a variety of healthy properties and is used to treat a wide variety of ailments and diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and various skin conditions. It is also popular as an aphrodisiac and to enhance energy, but it’s the various medicinal properties contained within the suma root that have the health community and herbalists taking note.
Like Brazilian ginseng, suma imparts energy to the body when ingested and helps to relieve stress, but it also does much more. The herb is not yet widely popular because research is still undergoing to determine much of suma’s health benefits, but studies have so far yielded many significant results.
Suma can help strengthen the immune system and contains several useful chemicals that help to fight against and prevent cancer, and lower cholesterol. Suma also helps regulate blood sugar levels and is widely used to treat the effects of chronic fatigue.
Other claims that have yet to be scientifically proven state that suma can help prevent ulcers, ease stress and anxiety, and provide relief from menstrual pain.
Researchers are particularly interested in suma’s cancer-fighting properties and its anti-inflammatory characteristics. Some doctors in Brazil regularly prescribe suma to cancer patients and as a medication for sufferers of various other diseases.
Suma also contains a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, including the beneficial germanium and several useful amino acids.
We can find Suma in health and nutrition stores, sold as a dietary supplement primarily in capsule form but also as a tincture. They also used it in some herbal shampoos and bath products to revive the body’s energy.
